This week’s 1L Weekly Docket features tons of job opportunities, many of which are paid with law firms, public interest organizations, corporations, law school clinics, and government offices. Many do not have published deadlines but all are reviewing applications on a rolling basis so the early bird gets the worm. Job Opportunity: Public Rights Project Summer Internship:

Public Rights Project seeks current law students for legal intern placements in Oakland, California for Summer 2019. Our summer internships are full-time.

Public Rights Project is a public interest legal nonprofit launched in 2017 to empower state and local governments to protect the rights and freedoms that define us as Americans. We support progressive state and local governments to bring affirmative litigation to enforce civil rights, consumer protection, and environmental laws. Many of these cases are those the federal government may no longer pursue to protect communities from fraud, discrimination, and disenfranchisement. Public Rights Project helps states and cities increase state and local rights enforcement across the country.  

We work with state and local prosecutors’ offices, including Attorneys General, District Attorneys, and City Attorneys’ Offices. We help them identify promising legal theories to enforce their residents’ legal rights, and we help them marshal the resources to take action. We also run a fellowship program to embed early-career attorneys (3-5 years out of law school) in government for two years.

An internship with Public Rights Project would be ideal for students interested in cutting-edge impact litigation, public service, and creative strategies to push back against federal encroachment on core civil rights and the rule of law. Interns will have an opportunity to work directly with the Legal Director, President, multiple cities and states across the country, and nonprofit partners. Interns will also have an opportunity to help shape the direction of a nonprofit legal startup and gain valuable experience in organizational and program design.

Desired qualifications include: 

  • Excellent research and writing skills
  • An interest in public service lawyering and/or nonprofit management
  • Experience working in government and/or on campaigns
  • Experience with clinics and/or plaintiff-side litigation is a plus, but not required
  • Coursework in Fed Courts, Advanced Civil Procedure, and/or Advanced Constitutional Law is a plus, but not required

Job Opportunity: Juvenile Rights Practice Legal Intern, The Legal Aid Society of New York

The Legal Aid Society’s Juvenile Rights Practice (JRP) has non-paid legal internship openings in its trial offices and specialized units for the Summer 2019 term. We are seeking law students dedicated to children’s issues and juvenile justice. Legal interns work directly with JRP attorneys in an inter-disciplinary team with social workers, paralegals, and investigators. Job Opportunity: FINRA Internship, Chicago

FINRA is the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority. FINRA’s mission is to safeguard the investing public against fraud and bad practices. They write and enforce rules and regulations for every brokerage firm and broker in the United States, and examine broker-dealers for compliance with FINRA rules, federal securities laws, and rules of the Municipal Securities Rule-making Board. FINRA also educates and informs investors, and resolves security disputes. This position will especially be more appealing to those applicants who desire to work in the securities industry, but those interested in the strict practice of law will find the externship very beneficial.

Job Summary: The Externship Program for the Department of Enforcement is designed for students who have an interest in securities law and regulation. The Extern will assist attorneys and investigative staff to investigate and initiate enforcement actions against FINRA regulated firms and associated individuals (typically, stockbrokers). The Extern, while working under the supervision of an Enforcement attorney, will be given an opportunity to perform all of the tasks undertaken by Enforcement attorneys, including being assigned his or her own cases to resolve. 

Externs perform a variety of tasks including legal research and writing and document review, as well as assisting staff to prepare for investigative testimony and hearings. Externs will analyze whether a disciplinary action should be brought against a firm and/or broker, and draft the settlement agreement or Complaint. Externs will also draft the internal memoranda required to obtain approval of the settlement agreement or draft Complaint.

Paid summer job opportunity: The Jerome N. Frank Legal Services Organization 2019 Paid Summer Fellowships at Yale Law School

The Jerome N. Frank Legal Services Organization of Yale Law School (LSO) invites applications for its 2019 Summer Fellowship program. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. LSO is the main organization at Yale Law School providing legal representation to individuals and organizations in need of legal assistance but unable to afford private attorneys. LSO seeks to hire 20-25 Summer Fellows to work with clinical faculty in order to continue this client representation. These are paid positions, with a salary of $7,080 for 12 weeks of full-time work ($14.75/hour). The Fellowship will run from May 21 to August 16, 2019, with some flexibility as to start and end dates.  

Summer Fellows can expect to have a range of challenging and rewarding lawyering experiences during the course of their time at LSO, including client interviewing and counseling; factual development of cases; researching and writing legal memoranda; drafting of contracts and other legal instruments; interacting with opposing counsel, government actors, and community stakeholders; and negotiation and alternative dispute resolution. In several of our clinics, students will make court appearances to argue motions or present evidence. Fellows will work under the direct supervision of clinical faculty members and supervising attorneys, and will have significant responsibility for each case or project on which they work.  In addition, faculty members will host a weekly series of presentations and discussions for the Fellows on the work of the clinics, public interest lawyering, and other topics of interest.

Paid job opportunity: 2019 Summer Peggy Browning Fund Fellowships, Jan 18 Deadline, $6000 stipend

Our core program is the Summer Fellowship Program, which is comprised of a 10-week fellowship during the summer months at labor-related organizations around the country.  

The Summer Fellowship Program provides stipends to 1st and 2nd year law students who dedicate this time to advancing the cause of workers’ rights.  We routinely collaborate with over 150 participating law schools and selected mentor organizations nationwide.

Summer Fellowship stipends will be a minimum of $6,000 per student for the ten-week employment period.  In many cases, mentor organizations will supplement the stipend. (See each fellowship description for details)
