With OCI rapidly approaching and the OCIPs already underway, let me throw an important reminder out to all of you reading this: Don’t put all your eggs in the OCI basket! The universe of potential employers for you is much, much larger than those who visit campus or participate in an OCIP. This is particularly important to remember for those of you pursuing law firm summer associate positions. Here’s why.
While timelines vary slightly, most law firms with annual summer associate programs are hiring at roughly the same time. Some actively recruit our students through OCI, the OCIPs, and resume collections, and others don’t. Either way, they are all working hard to fill their summer programs with talented students before they get snapped up by the competition. So, for those of you thinking that you’ll see how OCI and the OCIPs turn out before you start applying to other firms, please think again. Most firms will be well on their way to filling their summer programs by the middle of September, so waiting until after OCI and the OCIPs can leave you with limited options.
I know it can be tempting to assume that one of your OCI or OCIP interviews will lead to an offer — and for many of you that will be the case — but it’s far better to be safe than sorry.
If you have questions about pursuing summer associate positions outside of OCI and the OCIPs, please contact a CDO counselor. We are happy to help you navigate those waters.
