Federal Work Study and Law School Funding Payment Mechanics

Now that you are getting ready to head into the summer and begin your summer jobs, you are probably turning your attention to federal work study and law school funding and wondering about the mechanics for getting paid. I am here to help!

Federal work study and law school funding is taxed and is divided into multiple pay periods over the summer so you cannot expect one lump sum of $4,000 to appear in your account. Due to these factors, students often think that they have not gotten paid their full funding but the vast majority of the time, they have been. If you are taking advantage of the federal work study and law school funding programs and you received a scholarship from a student organization such as WLF, your scholarship will also be divided into multiple pay periods over the summer and paid on the same dates as the summer stipend is paid.

Law school funding recipients will get paid on June 15, June 30, July 15, and July 30. Generally, the federal work study payment dates are June 15, June 30, July 15, and July 29. Most of you will get paid your first federal work study payment on June 15 and a few of you may get paid on May 31. Your first and last federal work study payments are keyed to the dates your agency agreement specified you were stopping and starting work. Thus, your payment dates have nothing to do with when you actually started and finished worked.

For most people, if your agency agreement stated that you were going to start work prior to May 31, you will get paid on May 31. If your paperwork was processed really late, however, you might not get paid until June 15. If your agency agreement stated that you were going to start work after May 31 and before June 15, your first payment will be on June 15.

If your agency agreement states that your last day of work is July 29, then July 29 will be your last payment date and you will receive no payments in August. If your agency agreement states that you are working through August, you will receive payments through August. Many of you will receive no federal work study payments in August.

Please note that these payment dates do not apply to research assistants.
